The Great Directory Review

Issue 1.  Released: June 2007.

Globally Local

A Globally Local Production

I have gone through a vast number of "blog directories" where one can submit ones link and improve the search standingings and my findings on non specilist and reasonably general blog directoies are summarised in the sortable chart below.  Some very good directories were left out of the listing because they were too specialist.  Once you start including speicist listings where do you stop?

Blog Directory Information about the directory Notes Alexa RankCorrect at time of last review
dir.yahoo.com - Weblogs be carefull - do this by hand Although no longer the "king of the hill" a yahoo listing is still imporant.  It is worth taking the time to get your entry just right.  Unless you have money to burn choose the free option. 1
dmoz.org - Weblogs
there is no court of appeal if the editor does not like you
be carefull - do this by hand You will need to navigate to a respectable subdirecory first.  After your submittion to yahoo this may seem oddly familure.  If you have saved your short description that you worked out for yahoo's directory then you can use it here too.  Remember there is no court of appeal should you offend the editor in question. 330
blogcatalog highly recomended A strong rival for MyBlogLog.  Blog Catalog started life as a simple directory but has gained social search and other web 2.0 trappings.  They povide widgets for your site and tracking stats for your clicks and visitors. 3832
blogflux Membership Required At first look it seems a bit "spammy" which is simply a minor design consideration.  You will need to take the time to register to get listed. 5014
blogs.botw.org You have to pay to get listed
Once I saw you needed to pay to be listed I left again.
Only pay for listings if you can spare the money
7501
geekyspeaky.com Check the small print You are going to need to pay or link back to them to get your listing.
Pay with cash or with link
12720
blogpulse.com Join the conversation Blog puls is not so much a directory as a search engine.  It provides a large number of metrics and tools for monitoring blogging as a whole.
24623
blogdigger.com Good Site Also a search engine however with this offering you need to submit your XML feed.
RSS and ATOM feeds are produced by all leading platforms
2959
blogarama.com Check the small print A classic Directory. However, a link back "boosts" your in the ranking.
Watch out for th malformed HTML in the link code adding a listing also creates an account
34422
bloghop.com Membership Required I did not bother creating an acocunt.  The list of directories I have yet to get through is too long to mess about with accounts. 43893
blogrankings.com Membership Required DMOZ "wanna be".  You need to provide a lot of information and fill out a captcha test so I moved on. 55745
findory.com Good Site Not so much a directory as a mush up of all blogs submitted.  A news centre if you will.  End result is - it adds value for it's readers and is not part of a mild gaming of the system.
60456
bloggernity.com Membership Required I did not like the look of the site and would have left but for the need to keep going witht he research.  As it required a membership I did not want to create I did not add my site. 49235
bloggeries.com You have to pay to get listed If you want your link here be prepared to part with piles of cash even if you give a link back tot hem for a discount. 62304
bloghub.com Membership Required Looked exactly like bloggernity.  So much so that I'd have to say they must be using the same package and theme. 72842
lsblogs.com be carefull - do this by hand Very much like DMOZ but a tad harder to navigate.  If you are to ge any value from adding a link here you will need to locate a good page to be added to. 75375
blog-search.com Membership Required What can one say about a site where the directory options are tiny and most of the rest of the space is other things?  If you think the site is worth being listed on then sign up otherwise move on. 79859
weblogalot.com Good Site As ugly as sin but so easy to submit to your feed to that you can easily forgive it.  In fact if your blog has the ability tosend custom ping notiifications then you can submit automatically every time you post. 81829
globeofblogs.com Pass but only just
This site is also quite ugly and at first I thought it was some sort of dodgy reblog or maybe a splog.  The listing add page is a pop-up and is very very long.  Not at all friendly. 78974
bloguniverse.com Membership Required Looks like a spam-u-like fake search engine.  Requires a membership.  None of my friends link to it.  I, therefore, do not trust it. 91595
getblogs.com Good Site Being sure to pass the quest of getting in to dmoz.org (The ODP) will get you listed here as a knock on effect. 101260
delightfulblogs.com You have to pay to get listed Not only do you have to pay but you have to link back to them to.  Another "PHP Link Directory" script. 130650
bloogz.com highly recomended What a nice, clean and easy to use site.  Adding the blog was a case of simply submitting the root url and then they take care of the rest.  Brilliant. 107448
portal.eatonweb.com Membership Required Although a login ID is required once you have that the submit form is in the sidebar ready for use whenever you want it. 116027
readablog.com Pass but only just On the whole this is a good directory but when I fed it a feed that had a technically incorrect character in it then it could not use the feed at all.  A better method would have been to skip the "damaged" element and continued regardless (error tollerance). 119470
findingblog.com Membership Required Another register to use directory.  It boasts some impressive stats but seems to keen to promote wordpress themes and downloads.
136705
all-blogs.net Check the small print You are going to need to pay or link back to them to get your listing.  Another one that seems to run "PHP Link Directory".
Pay with cash or with link
141526
bloglisting.com Good Site A very odd looking directory.  Easy enough to submit to even if you have three or four blogs to do at once.
163050
blogdup.com Check the small print Another one running a common directory script.  A return link is required. 169322
outpost-earth.com
highly recomended This is more of a metablog than just a directory.  Sorted by region and topic the most recent updates to lsited blogs are listed.  The add process is painless and creates a simple account for each blog.
103881
blogcode.com Membership Required You will need an account to get in here and add blogs.  However you might not want to turn this one down.  It has a quality look about it and I think this is one I might come back to when I have more time. 200304
blogannounce.info You have to pay to get listed Not only do you have to pay even with a link back but it's ont he overspammed dot info TLD. I would be sceptical of using this service at all. 224876
blog-directory.org Pass but only just Shocking design, nice easy to use form to add a blog.  Third party JavaScript might want speeding up a bit though. 238082
sarthak.net/blogz highly recomended Blog search engine.  Clean, nice, easy to use.  Loved it. 235945
blogdirs.com Pass but only just One more cookie cuter script packaged reciprical link directory with no added value. 234280
addurlblog.com Some Technical Issues Not currently taking new entries until next year. 255780
5starblogs.com Membership Required Nothing on the site that gave any reason to sign up for an account. 231730
blogtagstic.com You have to pay to get listed The front page may be PR5 and some lsiting pages might be PR4 but for the price you'd be better off swapping links with regualr bloggers. 266704
MyBlogLog
highly recomended MyBlogLog is relatively new to the scene but has already made big waves getting purchased by Yahoo in no time flat.  It combines social media with blogging and a directory to form something new. 444
industry-blogs.com Check the small print Another phpWebDirectory script.  As with all such insallations a link back is not optional. 270163
blogbib.com Check the small print You are going to need to pay or link back to them to get your listing.  Another one that seems to run phpLD.
Pay with cash or with link
270449
kmax.ws Submit your entry be emai only I finally found a message saying how to get listed by using the firefox search page tool and it mentioned snding an email but I did not find an email address. 291340
blogs-collection.com Check the small print Looks exactly like a spam-u-like fake search engine.  You have to use thier link code to get "premuium" listing (whatever that might be). 285682
diarist.net Some Technical Issues They seemed to have moved the add page without updating the links to it when I was there.
Whoops!
314116
blogbunch.com Some Technical Issues For some reason it rejected the feedburner feed.  So I'm not listed on that site - I would complain but there are a lot more directories to review. 304342
bloghints.com Good Site Appears to be another phpLD directory.  The free and no link back seems to work. 344265
search4blogs.com Membership Required The focus of the site is to push affiliate programs and cross link lots of the webmasters other sites.  The Alexia Rank seems to have dipped of late too.  I would not use it to look for anything. 417680
thevital.net Good Site A simple ease to use directory.  If only there could all be like that.
You need to confirm your email address before your listing is considered
424309
highclassblogs.com Submit your entry be emai only
This site seemed to have some encoding issues which was a shame because it seemed to stand out as otherwise very different.
487013
http://jenett.org/ageless/ Check the small print More a listing than a directory.
498614
bestblogs.org Check the small print You are going to need to pay or link back to them to get your listing.  Another one that seems to run phpLD.
Pay with cash or with link
577038
blogdust.com Some Technical Issues When attempting to choose free, regular link (with the reciprical link option) I faced a pile of smarty template errors.  As a result I could not register.  Runs the same script as geekspeaky.com something called phpLD. 598780
blogadr.com Some Technical Issues I had a hell of a task getting the focus to move intot he form.  I'm not sure if it was broken JavaScript or a pagejacking by an advert.  I used the tabs to tab in from the google search box. 520364
technorati.com Join the conversation You can and possibly should create an account at this site.  They are considered an authority on blogs even though they are sometimes accused of naughtiness.
They use nofollow on out bound links so your listing here will not effect google
198
biggerblogger.com Check the small print Powered by a "free" php directory script so expect copies to abound. 631231
blogroll.net Membership Required Not just a directory.  Voting and stats included too. 697881
blogscholar.com Membership Required Once I realised it was by account only I quickly grew cold on this site and left rather to quickly to be able to tell you much about it. 766713
http://www.blogpoint.com/ Check the small print A multi stage form that lost us on page two when it asked for the location of the reciprical link.
The link to add a new listing is hidden at the bottom of the page
731357
browseblogs.com Good Site A nice enough directory.  Easy to use and easy to submit to. 904243
blogsrating.com Good Site A site where others vote for your blog.  It was unclear if there was added or reduced value from this feature. 887004
blogdir.co.uk
Look out for the malformed HTML
Good Site Like DMOZ or Yahoo they ask that you naviagte to the correct section before submitting your link.  They also ask for a link back but were unclear if this was optional. 1044878
quickblogdirectory.com Check the small print Looks spammy and requires a reciprical link in place before you submit your URL. 1358270
